'Angels of the poor' during the COVID-19 pandemic – Let us not abandon the people living in the streets, the poor families and the elderly

Dear Friends,

In the previous weeks we have all retreated to our homes in order to prevent the spread of the epidemic and try to prepare for the subsequent period as much as possible. This is just right as it is our common interest.

During these hard times the Community of Sant'Egidio would not like to abandon those people who are the most endangered. Therefore, we help disadvantaged children during this extraordinary period in online learning and we support their access to technological devices necessary for continuing their studies.

We give food packages to poor families for whom economic insecurity became an everyday reality because the parents lost their jobs due to the spread of the coronavirus. We support the forlorn elderly, do the shopping for them and help them keep in touch with others. We distribute food, warm blankets and toiletries among people living in the streets and we are also in contact with people who can sew face masks that we can give to the poor.

The Community of Sant'Egidio does the above services in four areas of the country: Budapest, Pécs, Monor and Győr.

Another option: It is also a great help if you prepare uniform packages at home (that may contain the following items: sandwich, canned pâté or fish with a slice of bread, a disposable spoon, a small can or bottle of juice, a chocolate or muesli bar, a disposable face mask and hand sanitizer gel or tissues) and when you leave home to do the shopping for example you can give these packages to poor people you meet on the way or place them in a special food donation box if there is one in the vicinity of your house. /Please always wear a face mask and gloves while preparing the packages at home./
